Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists have skills to help maintain or improve patients’ quality of life.

They assess and treat people with physical problems caused by accidents, ageing, disease or disability. Physical approaches are used to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being. Treatments may include the use of exercise, mobility aids, manipulation, ice and heat.

The Centre provides a physiotherapy service to individuals who are undergoing treatment and are experiencing difficulties that are directly related to, or made worse by, their disease or treatment.

The physiotherapy service is primarily ward-based and helps people by:

  • Working to regain/maintain mobility and function following a period of bed rest or because of reduced movement, via exercise and use of mobility aids
  • Helping to alleviate symptoms of chest infections and/or breathing difficulties
  • Helping to alleviate pain by use of TENS machines, heat and ice
  • Helping to alleviate the symptoms of stress/ anxiety through the use of relaxation and breathing exercises

An outpatient service is provided on the same basis but also offers a service to patients attending for radiotherapy to the breast in a group or individual setting.

What will the physiotherapist do?

The physiotherapist will assess, treat and set goals with informed consent of patients.

If agreed, family, carers and colleagues will also be included in the discussion and treatment and other members of the Centre’s team may also be involved.
