Get to know Jazmin

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis…Jaz and I am just preparing for my third year at university in Sheffield where I am studying Law. I have previous volunteered with Everton Football Club and their ‘Passing on the Memories’ programme which supports individuals, families and carers who live with dementia.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. I have always enjoyed the experience that volunteering brings and an opportunity to help people when they need it most. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic meant that my studies were paused and I came home to Liverpool.I was aware of the national call to action for volunteers to help in various roles and the opportunity to help prepare for the opening of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool inspired me to be part of something quite special for the city and the NHS.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. I wanted to ensure that patients have the best possible experience whilst undergoing their cancer treatments and was proud to prepare their rooms before the hospital opened - from arranging furniture to making the beds. I have now returned to Sheffield to prepare for my final year of university but hope to volunteer on an ad-hoc basis during half term and holidays.

Volunteering at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool was such a memorable experience, I made lots of new friends and 2020 will be a summer I will never forget

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A. ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway.’ I read a book a few years ago by Susan Jeffers and it was so impactful.I believe everyone experiences fear sometime in their life and this book helps you handle any situation, triumph over your fears and move forward.

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?

A. Music, food and a hammock!

Q. What would people be surprised to discover about you?

A. In 2018 I walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey carrying the Barbados flag as part of Commonwealth Day. It is an annual service celebrating the 54 commonwealth countries, what they have achieved together and what they hope to achieve in the future. As my grandad was originally from Barbados and was part of the Windrush generation it was such an honour to represent Barbados.
