Get to know Fliss

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Fliss, I’m an Adult Nursing Student from Liverpool and I work in hospitals in Knowsley and Liverpool as a Nursing Assistant. I also volunteer for St John Ambulance and am the Unit Training Lead for the First Aid Society at The University of Chester.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. I chose to volunteer at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as I love my job working in hospitals and I wanted to be able to help others during my spare time. I love chatting to patients, finding out about their journey and just making their hospital stay a bit more comfortable - it’s great to be able to do these things in this new and important hospital!

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. Seeing a volunteer’s friendly face or knowing that we are there to listen can reduce the anxiety levels of patients and their family members - we’re here to help wherever we can.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A. When I was 20 years old I found myself out of work for the first time. After being distraught at not being offered a job after I went for an interview, my job advisor said to me ‘what’s for you won’t go past you’. Now, whenever I find myself disappointed, I think back to what she told me.

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?

A. I would take coffee, a bottle of Lush shampoo and a hairbrush!

Q. What would people be surprised to discover about you?

A. My favourite subject that I own tonnes of books on is post-war modernist architecture or architecture made out of concrete. I absolutely love it and my dream is to live in a flat in the Barbican in London.
