Get to know Connie

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Connie and I am a third-year biological science student at the University of Liverpool. My role as a volunteer includes welcoming patients as they arrive at the hospital, helping them get to their appointments and supporting staff on the wards.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. Five years ago, my nan was diagnosed with cancer. With the help of the excellent care she received from the NHS, she is still going five years on and her strength amazes me. I want to be able to give something back to the NHS and make a difference by offering help and support for those going through a similar situation.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. I think most importantly volunteers are a friendly face during what can be a very stressful time for many. Particularly during the Coronavirus pandemic, many patients are having to attend appointments alone and something as simple as guiding them to their appointment, making them a cup of tea or just having a chat can make a real difference to their experience at the hospital.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

A. ‘Just do what makes you happy.’

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you have to have with you?

A. Water, a good book and an endless supply of chocolate.

Q. What would your colleagues be surprised to discover about you?

A. I am the first person in my family to go to university!
