Get to know Phil

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Phil and I'm a full-time Support Worker from Liverpool. I assist individuals who are unable to live independently by offering them the practical help they need as well as emotional support. As a volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, you’ll find me in the main entrance of the hospital, giving patients my wholehearted dedication and care.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. In 2016 my Dad sadly past away from cancer. During this time my Mum found a lump in her breast and kept it a secret from the family. Eventually her best friend forced her to break the news to us all and from that moment on I supported her with every appointment and chemotherapy treatment. On 26th February 2018 my mum rang the end of treatment bell at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Aintree. The staff at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre were great at calming my mum’s nerves and making her feel safe. So, I decided to give back to the hospital by offering my services as a volunteer.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. As a volunteer I hope to be that friendly face patients feel comfortable approaching. I also want to share my experiences to let each individual know they're not alone.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

A. Give every patient your full attention and listen to what they have to say.

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you have to have with you?

A. I couldn't live without my beautiful wife, family and dumbbells.

Q. What would your colleagues be surprised to discover about you?
