Get to know Lauryn

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Lauryn and I am a third-year medicinal chemistry student at the University of Liverpool. My role as a volunteer includes assisting patients as they navigate around the hospital, helping out wherever needed and, of course, making top tier cups of tea.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. I wanted to help people during my spare time especially when the COVID-19 lockdown was announced. When the opportunity arose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool I jumped at the chance. It’s a privilege to meet and chat to all the amazing patients and staff and have the chance to help out in a brand-new hospital.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. I think just having a friendly face there as you enter the hospital can make a world of difference, especially at the moment when patients aren’t allowed to have someone accompany them to their appointments due to the COVID-19 visitor restrictions. Hopefully something as simple as a chat in the lift or up the stairs makes the patients feel more at ease and less alone.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

A. Treat others the way you would want to be treated, you never know what’s going on in someone’s life.

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you have to have with you?

A. Sun cream (I’ve been blessed with ginger hair), a boat and an oar to get away.

Q. What would your colleagues be surprised to discover about you?

A. Probably that I’m half Scottish which is most likely where the ginger came from!

Did you enjoy meeting Lauryn? Well, we have lots of other volunteers you can meet, like Rudy and Rachael.
