During treatment

Proton beam treatment may make your eye and eyelid red, which can be minimised by treating your eyes and eyelids carefully:

• From the first treatment day do not use any creams, lotions or make-up on the eyelids. Wash the skin around your eye carefully and then gently pat the skin dry.
• Do not rub your eye or eyelid.
• Apply a cold compress to your eyelids for 10 minutes several times a day. This will help to soothe the skin of your eyelids.
• Keep your eyelids out of the sun, especially during the summer months, by wearing sunglasses.
• Avoid swimming in the first few weeks.
• If you had local anaesthetic drops in your eye, keep your eye covered for an hour to protect against dust. If you are out in a strong wind you may find that it is more comfortable to cover your eye up, but remove the pad when you are indoors.
