Treatment

You will have four daily sessions of proton therapy from Tuesday to Friday and your treatment is set up exactly as in the final treatment preparation on the Monday. The only difference is that the radiographer may put a couple of drops of local anaesthetic into your eye to prevent blinking during treatment.

Once correctly positioned, the physicist and radiographer leave the room and your treatment, which takes about 30 seconds, will start. You will hear a loud humming sound but will feel absolutely nothing.

Both the radiographer and physicist will monitor you closely from a control desk during this time to ensure everything is okay.

The whole procedure, from start to finish, takes about 20 minutes each day.

While the local anaesthetic wears off you will be given an eye pad to wear, which can be removed after about one hour.
