Get to know Meg

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Meg and I have been volunteering at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre since January 2021. I retired last year having worked with GPs for many years, and I’ve always enjoyed working with and meeting new people.

My interests at home include my dog, Ollie, and looking after my son’s dog. My partner and I love walking the dogs and spending time at the allotment, which has been a blessing during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also enjoy home decorating, cooking and singing with my choir.

However, my main interest is spending time my lovely family including my amazing granddaughter.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre?

A. I chose The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre because I have had acquaintances at work and family who have been affected by cancer and who have benefited from the care they have received.

Q. Can you describe how you think your role as a volunteer will contribute directly or indirectly to improving patient care?

A. I think all the volunteers really help the nursing staff, taking a little bit of pressure off them by doing things like distributing teas and coffees, and generally having a chat with the patients. A smiling face and a friendly hello is very welcoming when a patient or family member is in a time of stress and pain.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

A. Always look left and right!

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?

A. A strong fishing net, a medical kit and a knife… OR Amazon Prime delivery, WiFi and Netflix!

Q. What would your colleagues be surprised to discover about you?

A. I have appeared on TV on several occasions! One starring role in a programme called Bergerac saw me being put into a body bag and lifted into an ambulance! Also my twin daughter and son and I appeared on the first outside broadcast of Going Live!

I have also paraglided from the top of a very high mountain twice.

Did you enjoy meeting Meg? Well, we have lots of other volunteers you can meet, like Steph and Phil.
