Walkers like to be beside the seaside to help The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity

Hundreds of walkers enjoyed a trip to the seaside to raise thousands of pounds for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.

The annual Beside the Seaside Walk, on Sunday morning, attracted supporters young and old, as well as those on four legs.

Walkers refused to let the high winds deter them, with around 700 people at Crosby Coastal Park to enjoy the annual event.

The ever popular Pooch Parade was also back, attracting 50 furry entries. Schnauzer Chester was named Best in Show by fundraiser and Merseyside Woman of the Year Roz Tranfield, who also officially started the walk.

Walkers completed a course of either 5k or 8k to celebrate a life, remember a loved one or just enjoy time at the beach with family and friends.

At the end of the walk, there was also an opportunity for people to grab a bucket and spade to build a sandcastle and attach a message to a loved one or to thank staff at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Walkers were also raising money for the £15 million New Cancer Hospital Appeal to help build a specialist facility in Liverpool city centre to treat patients from Merseyside, Cheshire and surrounding areas.

The new hospital will treat both in-patients and out-patients and will also be a centre of excellence for research. Improvements are also planned for The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Wirral.

Samantha Archibald, Events Manager for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “It was fabulous to see so many familiar faces returning to our annual walk and of course to see so many new faces joining us.

“The wind certainly blew away any cobwebs on the return along the beach but it didn’t stop our walkers placing their decorated flags in their sandcastle at the end of walk.

“It’s an incredibly touching part of the walk as messages are left for loved ones, but it’s also great to see so many messages of hope from walkers currently receiving treatment and from former patients who are celebrating being cancer free.”
