Plans to build an 11-floor regional centre of excellence for cancer treatment and research on West Derby Street in Liverpool have already received overwhelming support from clinicians, patient groups, commissioners and cancer experts across the region.

Run by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, it will carry out highly-specialist cancer treatment, research and clinical trials and will be on the same site as Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the University of Liverpool’s medical faculty.

It will be in addition to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s sites in Wirral and Aintree and its chemotherapy and outpatient clinics in other hospitals across Merseyside and Cheshire.

The new 110-bed cancer centre will have superb facilities for people with solid tumours and blood cancers, including a special unit for teenagers and young adults. It will be funded by the NHS, supported by some public sector borrowing and a charity appeal.

Dr Peter Kirkbride, Medical Director of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “Cancer is the biggest single cause of death in Liverpool and people here are more likely to develop and die from cancer than the rest of England.

“It’s vital for the NHS in Liverpool to work together to deliver the very best facilities and highest standard of care. This new hospital forms a key part of the transformation of health services in Liverpool and is essential in bringing specialist cancer care closer to people’s homes, providing even better care for the most seriously ill patients, and establishing Liverpool as a major centre for cancer treatment and research.”

Liverpool City Council is currently considering the planning application with a decision expected this spring. The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Board has also given its backing to a business case for the scheme, subject to planning approval and the views of NHS Improvement, the body that oversees organisations providing NHS care.

Following that, The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre will be able to give final approval to the scheme. Construction is expected to start this autumn, with the new hospital opening to patients in late 2019.
