Staff come together to surprise young patient

Posted 7th January 2015

This month's Staff Achievement Award winners made a huge difference to a young patient.

Sarah Stead in Radiotherapy came up with a fantastic idea to create a giant 65 foot loom band so children could hold one end and parents the other during treatment - giving them the much needed reassurance during what can be a scary experience.

Along with her colleagues, Sarah spent endless hours making the enormous loom band. This is simple but highly innovative and made a huge impact to the patient experience. This also received a lot of coverage in the local media and on facebook and twitter.

When the first patient used the loom band Susan King in Communications heard how she was unable to visit Father Christmas as she had been too ill. Not only did Susan arrange for our very own Father Christmas (Ted) to visit her, she also arranged a visit from the girl’s favourite Disney character, Elsa – who sang to her on her last day of treatment. This was incredibly thoughtful and she created a special experience for the patient.

This is a great example of how staff go above and beyond.
