A Cheshire man who led a health authority in New Zealand and also has extensive commercial and strategic experience in both the private and not-for-profit sectors has joined the Board of the health trust that provides specialist cancer care for people in Merseyside and Cheshire.

Phil Edgington, from Wilmslow, has been appointed a non-executive director of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust.

Phil Edgington pictured outside The Clatterbridge Cancer CentrePhil (pictured right) began his career as an engineer in the energy sector before joining the senior management team of South Western Electricity in 1988. After two years as Chief Executive of a joint venture company in New Zealand, he moved into the not-for-profit sector as Chief Executive of a New Zealand charity for people with disabilities.

He spent two years in the mid-1990s as Chief Executive of the Central Regional Health Authority in New Zealand and since then has worked in key leadership roles both in the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.

Although his business skills were initially developed in large private companies in the energy sector, in subsequent years Phil has been using his insight to bring about strategic change in a range of public and not-for-profit organisations. They include being Chief Executive of the charity and health and social care provider Community Integrated Care (2007-2011) and being Chief Executive of Kainos Community, a prisoner rehabilitation charity that aims to reduce reoffending (2012-13).

He is also a former non-executive director of East Cheshire NHS Trust and has held non-executive roles at a number of organisations in the private and not-for-profit sectors.

Phil’s role at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre will see him bringing his business acumen and strategic skills to advise the Trust on its plans for the future. Non-executive directors are not employed by the NHS – they bring outside expertise to key decision-making and provide external scrutiny of a trust’s leadership.

Speaking of his appointment, Phil said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as a non-executive director at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust. I am looking forward to joining the team at this exciting time in its development and am committed to ensuring that the excellent standard of expertise and patient care continues to develop in the coming years.”

Alan White, Chairman of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “Phil has a wealth of experience having led high-profile businesses and charities spanning energy, healthcare, social care, criminal justice and disability. That rich array of knowledge and expertise will be hugely beneficial to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as we further realise our ambitions as a world-class centre of cancer care and research and I am delighted to welcome him to the team.”

Phil has been appointed with effect from 1st August 2014 for a term of three years as a non-executive director on the Board of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. He will attend his first Board meeting on 24th September. Phil succeeds Louise Martin, who stepped down from the Board at the end of July after completing 13 years as a non-executive director.
