Second anniversary of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool opening

Graphic saying CCC-Liverpool's 2nd birthday and including statistics from the story

Two years ago today (27th June) we opened the doors of our fantastic new flagship hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool (CCC-Liverpool), and welcomed our first inpatients with guards of honour and rounds of applause from staff and volunteers.

On Wednesday (29th June) we will be celebrating two years since CCC-Liverpool treated its first daycase patients and outpatients, delivering highly-specialist care including: chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other cancer drugs; radiotherapy; stem cell transplants; radiology; clinical interventions (e.g. PICC lines); outpatient consultations; and wraparound support including psychological medicine, clinical therapies and advice and support for people living with cancer, their families and carers.

CCC-Liverpool is also home to our region's specialist stem cell transplant unit and the region's Teenage & Young Adult cancer unit. Unlike most hospitals, every single inpatient has their own individual en-suite room and smart TV/entertainment system, giving them more autonomy and privacy and reducing infection risk. The inpatient rooms and Chemotherapy floor have fantastic views over the Liverpool city skyline while Radiotherapy benefits from a huge central lightwell and access to an outdoor Winter Garden.

Since opening, CCC-Liverpool has won a string of awards for its spectacular design and the quality of the facilities and environment for patients. Most recently, it won the RICS North West Public Sector Building of the Year and has gone forward to the national finals this autumn.

And in the past two years CCC-Liverpool has:
  • Cared for 27,139 individual patients
  • Delivered 34,888 chemotherapy treatments and 5,880 immunotherapy treatments
  • Delivered 69,544 radiotherapy treatments
  • Provided 147 stem cell transplants
  • Delivered 390,865 outpatient appointments
  • Had 9,231 inpatient admissions, caring for 3,894 individual inpatients
  • Served around 105,000 inpatient meals
  • Carried out 31,298 radiology tests and scans including
    • 15,247 CT scans
    • 6,062 MRI scans
    • 3,175 ultrasound scans
    • 6,177 x-rays
    • 237 PET-CT scans

CCC-Liverpool's location next to an acute hospital (Royal Liverpool) means we have been able to offer pioneering clinical trials and care for more complex and seriously unwell patients than we could previously when we didn't have onsite access to critical care and acute medical and surgical specialties. It means patients can now benefit from clinical trials that are still at their very earliest stages - Phase 1 or 'first-in-human' trials.

Earlier this year, a Merseyside man became the first in the UK to receive a new cancer vaccine that was tailor-made to his own personal DNA and designed to help his immune system ward off head and neck cancer permanently. Without CCC-Liverpool, this would never have been possible.

Our Chief Executive Liz Bishop said: "As CCC-Liverpool celebrates its second birthday, we want to say a huge thank-you to all our patients and their families and carers, our staff, our volunteers, and all our supporters. We're looking forward to CCC-Liverpool providing the very best, highly-specialist cancer care to the people of Cheshire & Merseyside and beyond for many generations to come."
