Re-design at cancer centre improves patient experience

Local comedienne Pauline Daniels showed her support for her local cancer centre when she officially opened the new Imaging department on Monday 2nd June.

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has invested over £600,000 to re-design the Imaging department to improve the patient experience.

All changing facilities have been re-designed to improve privacy and dignity for patients, following example of the award winning facilities at the Trust’s radiotherapy centre in Liverpool. The new main corridor area has also been re-designed to help improve the patient pathway.

Pauline Daniels, who was recently treated at the Centre, said: “Having had personal experience of the patient journey at the Centre I was honoured to be asked to officially open the new department. Staff at the Centre go out of their way to ensure they deliver the best care to their patients and backing this up with investment in the infrastructure is essential to making the patient journey as smooth as possible.

“I have been supporting The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity over recent months and it’s fantastic to see this project has been able to go ahead thanks to the continued support of their fundraisers.”
The new department also benefits from a new link corridor to improve access and to connect the department to the main hospital. There is a new reception and waiting area with floor to ceiling windows letting in lots of natural light and taking advantage of the pleasant outlook onto the garden area. There are also two new sub-wait areas, both fully glazed, again benefitting from the outdoor landscaping.

Construction work on the Diagnostic Imaging department completes the upgrade programme for clinical departments throughout the Trust.

Carol Cunningham, Imaging Manager said: “The re-design of the department will make the patients’ journey a lot smoother and will offer more privacy and dignity thanks to the new changing facilities. As a Trust we are committed to providing the best care to the people we serve and thanks to the Trust’s investment and the support of our fundraisers we have been able to make extensive upgrades, which will certainly make the experience more comfortable for patients.”

The Centre’s charity, The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, contributed £250,000 towards the work, raising money through various fundraising initiatives in the community, with corporate partners, at charity events and through direct marketing.
