Prof Arthur Sun Myint receives our Lifetime Achievement Award

Chief Executive Liz Bishop presented our Lifetime Achievement Award to Consultant Clinical Oncologist Professor Arthur Sun Myint at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Wirral yesterday (20th October), in the final stage of our Staff Excellence Awards 2022. [Watch the video below.]
Although Prof Myint was announced as the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award last Friday night, he was unable to receive it in person as he was overseas so Medical Director Dr Sheena Khanduri accepted it on his behalf. He received a standing ovation from his colleagues on the night!
Liz went to CCC-Wirral yesterday to present Prof Myint with his award and congratulate him on his landmark achievements as CCC’s longest-serving member of staff and as an inspirational clinical leader and researcher.
Prof Myint qualified as a doctor in 1972 in Yangon in what was then known as Burma and spent five years training as a medical oncologist. He came to the UK in 1977 to work in Southport and first visited CCC in 1979 where he met then Medical Director Dr Dawson who gave him a piece of advice that changed his career. Prof Myint recalls: “Dr Dawson said that if I wanted to do oncology, I needed to learn about radiotherapy as well and he said he would teach me.”
Prof Myint joined CCC in 1980 and got what Dr Dawson said were the highest marks he had ever seen when he took his exams in 1982 to qualify in clinical oncology.
In the years since, Prof Myint has made an enormous contribution not just to CCC but to clinical oncology and radiotherapy nationally and internationally. He brought the Papillon contact radiotherapy treatment for early rectal cancers to the UK and has educated and trained many more clinicians over the years. Prof Myint has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and has held a series of high-profile national and international roles. They include being a Past President of the International Contact Radiotherapy Society (ICONE) and a Past Chairman of the GEC ESTRO rectal & anal brachytherapy group.
He is also a talented artist who has exhibited his work and created the wonderful Timeline piece displayed on Level 0 of CCC-Liverpool. It tells the story of CCC from its earliest days to the Lego models that were such a feature of the fundraising appeal for the new hospital.

“Prof Myint has made such an enormous contribution to CCC in his 42 years here that it’s hard to think of a more deserving recipient for the Lifetime Achievement Award in our first ever Staff Excellence Awards. I’m delighted to be presenting it to him.”
Prof Sun Myint, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool, said:
"I am very humbled by this award. It's a recognition of my services to the patients and Clatterbridge over the past 42 years."
