Meet our Healthcare Support Workers: Sean

Posted 21st June 2021

Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) are hugely important to ensuring our patients at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre receive the best care, which is why we’re going to be recruiting a number of people to fill this kind of role soon.

To help you understand what this rewarding job involves and the type of people we’re looking for, we’re currently profiling some of the people who have become HCSWs at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Sean, 32, works as a Senior HCSW on the Integrated Care ward at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool.

He started working for the Trust three years ago, having previously worked as a HCSW at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for five years. However, prior to this Sean worked as a Chef.

Sean said: “I really enjoy working for the NHS as it’s so interesting and varied. My responsibilities include supporting the nursing staff by doing bloods, PICC bloods and PICC dressings, as well as basic patient care. I also carry out observations and do paperwork to keep up to date with fluid balances, reporting anything of concern to nursing staff.”

As a senior HCSW, Sean is able to support junior HCSWs, student nurses and new staff, putting his experience within the Trust to great use.

Sean said: “Helping my colleagues is so rewarding, but it’s working with patients that I love most of all. I chose to work specifically for Clatterbridge as I lost my fiancée to a brain tumour in 2017. I wanted to give something back as the care and compassion the staff gave her here was amazing.”

Now an experienced member of staff, Sean recommends working as a HCSW to anybody with an interest in working with and caring for people, regardless of their career history.

“The best piece of advice I have is to never give up when you feel you’re not good enough.”
