Everton giants kick-start charity scratch cards

Patients at the centre received a special visit from two Everton legends, as part of a new fundraising partnership with Everton in the Community (EitC).
Everton Giants Joe Royle and Graeme Sharp were on hand to kick-start a venture with The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Everton Lotteries scratch card, which is hoped will help raise £90,000 over three years to help build our new hospital in the heart of Liverpool.
Sales from the new scratch card will go towards ensuring patients have access to better, safer care, in the city’s new purpose built cancer hospital, as well as offering supporters with over £27,000 in prizes.
Fans can get their hands on the unique scratch cards during selected home games at Goodison Park and at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, with all the funds raised going towards transforming cancer care across the region.
Graeme Sharp spent the afternoon meeting patients and staff at the centre, said: “Today was a real eye-opener. I’ve spoken with some incredible patients today, they’re very upbeat and it was nice to have a laugh and see them smile – it’s been an honour for me and Joe to be here!
“We hope that, with this new initiative and the help of football fans, we can help build a fantastic new facility that will help patients beat this horrible disease and support many people across the North West for years to come.”
Joe Royle joined Graeme on his visit, he said: “Football has always been a universal language – you can make someone smile, even at the worst of times.
“Going around here today and meeting an 83-year-old who is bright and can remember Everton much further back than I can, to a 19-year-old who can’t wait to get fit and referee a game again just shows how amazing this place is, believe me.
“Everton has always had a big community spirit – these scratch cards are a great extension of that and we’re hoping that they can make a difference to people from the region, no matter who you support.”
Christine Done, Capital Appeals Manager at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “We are delighted to be working with Everton in the Community on this project, which we know will mean so much to their fans. One in two of us is expected to develop cancer over our lifetime – that’s every other person in Goodison Park on a matchday – so it’s important that everyone gets behind the building of a brand new dedicated cancer hospital in the heart of the city.
“This is a great way to show your support and have the chance of winning a cash prize at the same time. This is a once in a generation opportunity to transform cancer care in our region and we are so lucky to have EitC on board with us.”
The three-year partnership follows a successful period for Everton Lotteries, which last season alone raised over £200,000 for EITC – helping to deliver 60 programmes covering a range of social issues across Merseyside, including health, employability, anti-social behavior, youth engagement, poverty and disability.
