Consultation roadshow visits Wirral cancer centre

Posted 26th August 2014

Patients, staff and visitors to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre's main Wirral site have another chance to find out more and take part in the Transforming Cancer Care consultation today (26th August) as the roadshow visits them.

The consultation team will be in the RVS tea bar near Radiotherapy and Outpatients from 12pm-2pm today with information and consultation documents. People will be able to fill in the consultation questionnaire there and then or take it away and send it back via Freepost.

The Transforming Cancer Care consultation is seeking people's views on proposals to develop a new specialist cancer hospital on the same site as the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the University of Liverpool. This would become The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre's main site, with inpatient services and the most complex care. Cancer experts say this would mean the most seriously unwell patients receiving even better care, as the new centre would have on-site access to intensive care and other key specialties, unlike the Wirral site.

It would also bering services closer to the majority of patients in Merseyside and Cheshire and mean radiotheraoy was available on three sites rather than two. The new centre would also improve scope for groundbreaking cancer research and clinical trials by enabling Clatterbridge staff to work even more closely with university researchers and carry out trials that can only safely be done where there are other specialties and intensive care on site.

The Wirral site would continue to provide the majority of its existing services, though, and it's estimated about 90 per cent of local patients could continue to be seen there. The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre would also continue to run its radiotherapy unit at Aintree and its chemotherapy and outpatient clinics across Merseyside and Cheshire.
