The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has claimed further national recognition for its Metastatic Cord Compression Service (MSCC) after its leader scooped a prestigious award.

Kate Lacey, Metastatic Cord Compression Service (MSCC) Lead, won the Macmillan Professionals Excellence ‘Whatever It Takes’ Award 2023.

The Macmillan Professionals Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding contribution to cancer care and the Whatever It Takes Award is one of the most prestigious categories because it recognises “extraordinary efforts, where individuals and teams have had to adapt, innovate, collaborate, support wellbeing initiatives, show great resilience despite distressing situations and lead with compassion”.

Kate's vision and leadership have transformed MSCC care, both in Cheshire and Merseyside and nationally. Our MSCC service is now recognised as a national leader for the unique way it ensures people who develop potentially this devastating complication of advanced cancer get rapid diagnosis and treatment, extending life and improving their quality of life.

The team's work was featured across the BBC in August. In September, NICE rolled out new clinical guidelines on spinal metastases and MSCC based on the team's work and model of care. They are finalists in the upcoming HSJ Awards and were also finalists in the Nursing Times Awards.
