The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust – which provides specialist cancer care for the 2.4m people of Cheshire and Merseyside – has appointed Julie Gray as its new Chief Nurse.

Julie is currently Director of Nursing and Director of Infection Prevention & Control at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, where she has worked since 2005.

She will take up her new role at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in October and will be responsible for a wide portfolio including quality of care, professional leadership of the Trust’s nursing and AHP staff, clinical governance, and infection prevention and control.

Julie joins The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre at a pivotal time, as it marks the first anniversary of the opening of its new flagship hospital, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool in June 2020, and launches its strategic plan for the next five years.

Julie brings more than 30 years’ experience and a longstanding commitment to improving the quality of care and experience of people with cancer, who are worried they may have cancer or who have completed treatment and are living their lives after cancer.

She qualified as a nurse in 1993 after training in Salford and Bolton School of Nursing & Midwifery and spent the first years of her career as a staff nurse in gastroenterology, intensive care, adult medicine and general surgery.

After spending the next few years as a clinical tutor, Julie joined The Christie as a specialist nurse in blood transfusion and moved into more senior roles as a nurse manager and then director. She has a strong background in nurse education and professional development, and in transformation and methods for continually improving quality of care.

Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “Julie has a wealth of experience, warmth and energy and an outstanding background in cancer nursing, clinical governance and leadership. As Chief Nurse, she will play a vitally important role in ensuring we deliver the very best for our patients and our nursing and allied health professional staff. I am sure she will do an excellent job and we are very much looking forward to working with her.”

Speaking of her appointment, Julie Gray said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as Chief Nurse at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre; it is such a warm and compassionate organisation, with a committed and ambitious workforce. I am looking forward to working with the nurses, allied health professionals and all the team, supporting them to provide the best care and treatment possible.”
