Chris Lee, Lead Consultant Clinical Scientist and RPA for Specialised Services at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, has been awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal College of Radiologists in recognition of his "exceptional contribution to the clinical oncology examinations process".

The Royal College of Radiologists says that honorary membership may be awarded to "a limited number of individuals who have made notable contributions to clinical radiology or clinical oncology in the United Kingdom". Chris received his honorary membership at a virtual ceremony on Friday 11th June.

As our Lead Consultant Clinical Scientist for Specialised Services, Chris is responsible for medical physics for services including brachytherapy, Papillon and cyclotron eye proton therapy. He also advises on radiation protection. He has been heavily involved in physics education and training throughout his career, since giving lectures alongside his role as a physicist while at Barts in London in 1988.

Chris has been a specialist examiner for the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) for many years, a role that includes selecting questions, auditing them and introducing new questions for the physics exam that registrar doctors have to sit while qualifying for Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR).

He joined The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in 1995 and set up a physics teaching syllabus here. The consultant radiographer physics course is now in its fourth year and attracts radiographers from across the country to Clatterbridge.

Speaking about the award, Chris said: "It came as a complete surprise but obviously I am absolutely delighted and feel very honoured to have been recognised in this way by the Royal College of Radiologists. Over the many years since I started in healthcare science, it has given me much pleasure in being part of the success of all the candidates who have completed the physics course and I look forward to continue being involved in this process in the future.”

Carl Rowbottom, Director of Physics at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said: “This recognition of Chris’s commitment to physics education in oncology is very well deserved and all of us at the Trust congratulate him on being awarded this honour.”
