Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, will take on a new joint role with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 1st February 2024.

Liz has been appointed as the new chief executive of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) – as well as remaining chief executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC) – following a formal recruitment process.

The trusts will share a chief executive while remaining separate organisations. Sharing a chief executive has become common in the NHS in recent years and the move has been approved by the boards of both organisations and by NHS Cheshire and Merseyside.

The arrangement will enable the two high-performing, specialist trusts to continue working closely together for the benefit of patients, staff and the wider population while also retaining their unique focus.

Cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease are the biggest killers in our region and share many of the same underlying factors.

Kathy Doran, Chair of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, said:

“The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital are both leading specialist trusts based in Liverpool but providing services across Cheshire and Merseyside and beyond. Sharing a chief executive will benefit patients, staff and the wider population by sharing expertise and looking at how we can improve health outcomes for people in Cheshire and Merseyside.”

LHCH’s outgoing chief executive, Jane Tomkinson, is leaving after 10 years to become chief executive of the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
