Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool shortlisted for award by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool, which opened in 2020 as part of a £162m investment in expanding and transforming cancer care for the people of Cheshire and Merseyside, has been shortlisted for another architectural award.

The hospital has been shortlisted in the Public Sector Project category in the 2022 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards.

These awards showcase the most inspirational initiatives and developments in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure. They recognise outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies.

RICS said: “Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool is one of the largest networked cancer centres in the UK, combining world-class clinical services, research and academic excellence in Liverpool City Centre. The Centre enables the Trust to deliver the highest quality, specialist non-surgical oncology treatment and care for the wider region.

“The brief was met by the careful location of departments, designing the building to step back in profile at its upper levels, creating external terraced space for wards and the chemotherapy floor. The terraces have spectacular panoramic views across Liverpool, giving staff, patients and visitors alike access to external landscaping and fresh air.”

The hospital was designed by leading global architects, BDP. The project was managed by PropCare, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, with expertise in estates and contract management. The main contractor was Laing O’Rourke and the building was design engineered by AECOM.

The new hospital has a fantastic sense of light and space designed to enhance wellbeing, and many of our patients have commented on how much they value this.”
