Haemato-oncology research

Haemato-Oncology is the term used to describe cancers of the blood and lymphatic system. Blood cancer is the fifth most common type of cancer in the UK. Approximately 40,000 people are diagnosed with blood cancer every year in the UK. We separate teams of doctors and nurses to look after patients according to the type of blood cancer they have. Blood cancers develop when blood cells aren’t made properly and can be split into three types: leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Haemato-oncology open trials list

Leukaemia and Transplant

Leukaemia is a cancer originating in the bone marrow that leads to the formation of high levels of abnormal white blood cells. There are both chronic and acute types of leukaemia, with trials available for both indications. (Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia is cared for by the lymphoma team).

Dr Árpád Gábor Tóth are the consultants caring for patients with this type of blood cancer, as well as looking after those patients for whom a bone marrow transplant is a treatment option.

Katy Knight and Lauren Mercer are the Clinical Research Nurse Specialists (CRNS) looking after patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia. Sarah Watmough and Elizabeth Dale are the CRNS’s looking after patient with acute myeloid or acute lymphoblastic leukaemias. Stephanie Charnley is the CRNS looking after patients eligible for stem cell and bone marrow transplant trials.

Lymphoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia

Lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the infection fighting cells of the immune system called lymphocytes. There are many different types of lymphoma, including acute and chronic, with trials available for both indications.

Professor Andrew Pettitt, Dr Nagesh Kalakonda, Dr Rak Salim and Dr Arvind Arumainathan are the consultants caring for patients with this type of blood cancer. This team also looks after people with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.(CLL)

Jane Tinsley, Darren Keats and Lauren Quilty are the CRNS’s looking after patients on trials for lymphoma and CLL.

Myeloma

Myeloma is a cancer that develops from the plasma cells found in the bone marrow.

Dr Stephen Hawkins and Dr Gillian Brearton are the consultants caring for patients with this type of blood cancer.
