Get to know Melanie

Q. Introduce yourself…

A. #Hellomynameis… Melanie. I am 16 years old and have just started sixth form. I aspire to be in the medical field when I’m older and so have begun my journey by volunteering at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool. You will normally find me in the main reception where I like to help and direct patients - making them feel comfortable whilst enjoying a meaningful conversation.

Q. Why did you choose to volunteer at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Liverpool?

A. I chose to volunteer at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as it’s a beautiful hospital located in the heart of Liverpool. I want to help create a sense of togetherness and be part of making a difference by giving my time and support to patients and their family members.

Q. How do you think your role as a volunteer will contribute to improving patient care?

A. Patients can be very anxious when coming into hospital and I believe that I can use my communication and people skills to put people at ease and provide them with emotional strength and support. In doing so, they can worry less, have a positive experience and get the most out of their treatment.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

A. The best piece of advice I have been given is to always say to myself “I can and I will.”

Q. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you have to have with you?

A. I would take a knife (for food and shelter), fresh water and a flint. If there was one more option, I would take a helicopter to the desert island and fly away when I got there!

Q. What would people be surprised to discover about you?

A. Believe it or not… I have a telepathic connection with my brother even though he is nine years older than me!

Did you enjoy meeting Melanie? Well, we have lots of other volunteers you can meet, like Wayne and Jaz.
